Understanding the CompTIA Continuing Education Program
CompTIA is the leading provider of vendor-neutral certifications in the world. As a CompTIA Platinum Authorized Partner, New Horizons Southern California is dedicated to helping you achieve and maintain the valuable certifications offered by CompTIA. Therefore, we would like to share with you some important information and policies regarding CompTIA's Continuing Education program.
Having begun January 1, 2011, when you obtain certain CompTIA certifications after that date, they are considered valid for a period of three years. These certifications must then be renewed within those three years for that candidate to remain certified. CompTIA has established several different ways in which these certifications can be renewed.
What certifications are affected?
The following certifications from CompTIA fall under this renewal policy:
- CompTIA A+
- CompTIA Network+
- CompTIA Storage+
- CompTIA Security+
- CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP)
What are the benefits?
Candidates certified prior to January 1, 2011 are considered to be "certified for life", and their certifications need not be renewed. Why, then, did CompTIA change their policy after that point? From an employer's perspective, it is important for IT professionals to be able to demonstrate that their knowledge and skills are current, even at a foundational level. Some employers have even established this as a requirement for continued employment. For this reason, CompTIA even makes the new Continuing Education policy optionally available to those who previously "certified for life".
How do I meet the requirements?
CompTIA provides many means by which the Continuing Education / Certification Renewal requirement can be met. In a nutshell, you can obtain various numbers of "Continuing Education Units" (CEUs) by :
- Passing the most current exam for the candidate’s CompTIA certification
- Obtaining other approved industry certifications
- Teaching, lecturing or presenting on relevant industry topics
- Participation in non-degree courses or computer-based training
- Attending relevant industry conferences and events
- Participation in a CompTIA exam development workshop
- Publishing articles, white papers, blog posts or books on relevant topics
- Completing industry-related college courses from degree-granting institutions
Of all these, the first two actions have the potential of completely fulfilling the requirement in one action. The others qualify for a specific number of CEUs (see the CompTIA documentation). In addition, CompTIA requires an annual fee to be paid as part of the CE program. The table below shows the financial and CEU totals required for renewal of each certification:
